The Whisper We Ignore (Until It Won’t Be Quiet Anymore)

Have you ever noticed that little voice inside you?

The one that nudges.

The one that whispers, “Don’t do this again.”

Or, “There’s a better way.”

And yet… we repeat the same choice anyway.

Same habits.

Same patterns.

Same mistakes.

Not because we don’t know better — but because change feels risky.

I’ve learned something over the years, in both sport and life: our inner voice is rarely wrong. It’s usually fear that drowns it out.

We stay in the job that drains us.

We keep saying yes when we mean no.

We stick with what’s familiar, even when it’s clearly not working.

Why?

Because what we have feels safe.

Even if it’s uncomfortable… it’s predictable.

And sometimes the scariest thought isn’t failing — it’s succeeding.

What if we make the change and life actually gets bigger? Brighter? Better?

That kind of growth asks more of us. More courage. More responsibility. More stepping into who we really are.

That can feel terrifying.

As an athlete, I’ve had moments where my gut said, “Train differently. Rest. Speak up. Try another path.” Every time I ignored it, I paid for it. Every time I listened, something shifted forward.

Your inner voice isn’t there to sabotage you.

It’s there to guide you.

 But it doesn’t shout.

It whispers.

So maybe the question isn’t “What should I change?”

Maybe it’s…

“What have I known all along — but been too scared to act on?”

Because often, the life you want is waiting on the other side of one brave decision.
