It’s Never Too Late to Walk Away

Sometimes the bravest thing we can do is walk away.

Not because we have failed.

Not because we are giving up.

But because we finally realise that where we are going is no longer where we want to be.

We often talk about the importance of perseverance. Keep going. Never give up. Push through the tough times. And there is absolutely a place for that. Some of the best things in life happen because we were willing to stay the course when things got difficult.

But there is another side to resilience that we don't talk about quite as much.

Knowing when to walk away.

Maybe it is a job that once fulfilled you but no longer does.

Maybe it is a relationship that has run its course.

Maybe it is a goal you once dreamed about but have discovered isn't your dream anymore.

Maybe it is simply a version of yourself that you have outgrown.

Walking away can feel like failure because we have invested so much time, energy and emotion into something.

But time invested is not a reason to spend more time somewhere that no longer serves you.

Sometimes we stay because we are afraid of what people will think. Sometimes we stay because starting again feels overwhelming. And sometimes we stay because we tell ourselves, “I've come this far. I can't possibly walk away now.”

But what if walking away isn't going backwards?

What if it is actually moving forward?

I've learned throughout my life that it's never too late to change direction. Life doesn't come with a guarantee that the path we choose at 20, 30, 40 or even 60 will be the path we want to stay on forever.

And that's okay.

We are allowed to change our minds.

We are allowed to discover something new.

We are allowed to say, “This isn't working for me anymore.”  And we are certainly allowed to walk away.

The important thing is to understand the difference between walking away because something is difficult and walking away because something is no longer right for you.

Sometimes you need to dig deep and keep going. And sometimes you need to be brave enough to let go. Either way, the decision requires courage.

So perhaps today is a good day to ask yourself: What am I holding onto simply because I'm afraid to walk away?

And perhaps the most important question is: What could become possible if I did?

Because walking away doesn't always mean the end. Sometimes it is the beginning of something you never knew was waiting for you.

It's never too late to walk away. And it's never too late to take a different road.
