Unlocking Your Greatness

What would your greatest year yet look like?

Not someone else’s greatest year.

Not the year you think you should have.

Not the year that looks impressive on social media.

Your greatest year.

What would that look like for you?

Maybe it’s achieving a goal you’ve been putting off. Maybe it’s starting a new career, finding a new relationship with yourself, getting fitter, travelling somewhere you’ve always dreamed of, or simply learning to love and accept the person you see in the mirror.

Sometimes we spend so much time thinking about what we could do that we forget to ask ourselves a more important question:

What do I actually want?

I believe unlocking our greatness starts with three simple steps.

1. Find Your Meaningful Mission

Before we can move forward, we need to know what we are moving towards.

Your meaningful mission doesn't have to change the world. It simply needs to mean something to you.

It could be a big goal, like starting a business or changing careers. It could be something deeply personal, like learning to love yourself, rebuilding your confidence or finally doing something you've always dreamed about.

Your mission will undoubtedly change as your life changes.

The important thing is to find something that makes you think:

“Yes. This matters to me.”

Because when something has meaning, we are far more likely to find the motivation to pursue it.

2. Work Out What Is Holding You Back

Once you know what you want, ask yourself:

“What's stopping me?”

This is where things can get uncomfortable.

Maybe it's fear.

Maybe you don't believe you're capable.

Maybe you're worried about what other people will think.

Maybe you've convinced yourself that you're too old, too inexperienced or that it's simply too late.

And sometimes the biggest obstacle isn't what's happening around us.

It's the story we are telling ourselves.

I've certainly had moments when I've questioned whether I was capable of doing something new. The first step isn't necessarily to eliminate the fear.

Sometimes it's simply to recognise it and decide that it isn't going to make the decision for you.

3. Take Action

This is where dreams become reality.

And I'm not talking about making one giant leap.

In fact, I think we often make achieving our goals harder than it needs to be because we think we have to see the whole staircase before we take the first step.

We don't.

We just need to take the next step.

Break the big goal into small, achievable stepping stones.

Want to get fitter? Start with a walk.

Want a new job? Update your resume.

Want to start a business? Make the first phone call.

Want to learn something new? Sign up for the course.

Want to travel somewhere you've always dreamed of? Start researching it.

Every small action gives us evidence that we can do things.

And that builds confidence.

Sometimes we simply have to bite the bullet and do the thing we've been thinking about. Not when we're completely ready. Not when we're no longer afraid.

Now

Because confidence doesn't always come before action. Often, confidence comes from taking action.

So, What Would Your Greatest Year Yet Look Like?

Imagine looking back twelve months from now. What would need to have happened for you to say: “Wow. I really made this a great year.”

What would you have achieved?

What would you have changed?

What would you have started?

What would you have stopped?

And perhaps most importantly…

Who would you have become?

You don't need to have everything figured out.

You don't need to be fearless.

You don't need to make massive changes overnight.

You just need to know what matters to you, recognise what's standing in your way and then take that first step.

One small step.

Then another.

And another.

Because greatness isn't always found in one extraordinary moment. Sometimes it's found in all those small moments when we choose to believe in ourselves, take a chance and keep moving forward.

And it really is never too late.

My Wheelchair Curling Story

When I did a come and try day at Wheelchair Curling last year, it was just that; come and try.  A year later I’m asked to make up a team.  I thought I was just the female making up the ‘mixed’ component of the team.  Now I know I’m not because I have jumped in with both feet to really try and be the best I can be. More on this story in my next blog!

Perhaps that is the real secret to unlocking our greatness.

We don't always have to know where the journey will take us.

Sometimes we just have to be willing to start.
